HISTORY

One century ago, Koh-PhaNgan was already knew by Thai People for being one of the most favourite places of their King. The name of Koh-PhaNgan come from the word “ Ngan” meaning Sand Bar. You can see them at low-tide and they protect the island from the strong monsoon. However, the history of Koh-PhaNgan and Koh Samui started more than 2000 years ago.

PRESENT

Koh-PhaNgan is the fifth biggest island of Thailand with a surface of 191 km² ( TAT Tourist Authority of Thailand). It’s part of the province of Suratthani which is situated on the main land, about 100 kilometres West. The nearest islands are Koh Samui (nearly 20 km.) and Koh Tao, up North, (about 65 km.).

Koh-PhaNgan possesses two ports, (one in Haad Rin, South-East and the other one in Thong Sala, South-West). There is a lot of coming and going of tourists, (which stay most of the time not longer than a few days on the island). The reason ?: Probably the Full Moon Party, represented by the 20/30 years old.

The surface is here and there covered by untouched tropical forest, and its mountains slows down a development too fast.The faun on the island is enormous but difficult to observe, it counts about 200 different species.The island has a total of 30 splendid white beaches and a lot of beautiful small desert beachesAll the religions respect each other and you can find, Temples, Churches, Chinese Temples and a Mosque. The most obvious, when you arrive at Koh-PhaNgan, after being at Koh Samui, is the decontracted atmosphere and kindness of the local population. Even with its road and tracks, not always in top condition, it has something of paradise.

Koh-PhaNgan has always been a spiritual place for its natives and still today it is a piece of paradise. 30 % of Koh-PhaNgan is classified « National Park », which should preserve the island from a wild touristy development.
